Ah – my favorite part of the day! Morning. If you know me personally, you know I’ve always been a morning person at heart even in high school. I’m someone who thrives off of routine and especially with my “me” time before anyone else wakes up. I’m not a master, but I’d like to think I am 🤪 In this post, we’re going to review 4 ways to create a great morning routine if you love mornings or if you want to love mornings!
Whether you are a morning person or wanting to become one, this post will help you curate the habits that it takes to start loving your mornings. Luckily for me, I’ve always been partial to the morning time. Even in high school, I found myself hopping in bed and asleep by 9PM 🤗
Crafting a routine is key to “romanticizing” your time in the morning if it’s something you don’t enjoy. Because I’ve always loved my 5AM time to self, now I focus more on how I can prolong my mornings and be so intentional with the time spent. This post will be helpful for anyone wanting to create a new routine and stick to it!
What is a good morning routine?
Obviously the answer to this question will be determined on what you believe quantifies a good morning routine. Maybe it’s filled with no noise, maybe it’s extra time to work. Or, maybe it’s doing absolutely nothing but sitting in silence!
Either way, a good morning routine can best be determined by answering a few questions first:
- What am I hoping to get out of my morning?
- What are things I enjoy doing?
- How can I incorporate this into my daily routine?
Once you determine the answers to those questions, you can begin crafting your ideal morning routine. For me, it includes:
- Quiet time with Jesus
- Hydrating
- Working out
- Silence
- Reading a book
- Limiting screen time
How to create the perfect morning routine
Creating the perfect morning routine starts with figuring out your non-negotiables during this time period. As I discussed above, mine include many different elements such as quiet time, working out, reading and limiting screen time.
Maybe working out before 7AM sounds awful to you – that’s totally fine. Just create your own!
The second step to create the perfect morning routine is determining the “time” of your routine.
Because I’ve always been a morning person, getting up super early comes natural! So, my morning routine typically lasts from 5:30AM – 7:30AM (or until my husband wakes up!).
For you, maybe your morning routine starts a little later at 7AM – 9AM when you begin work. Or – maybe you wake up even earlier than I do and you want to start at 4AM. Either way, choose your time!
Lastly, I’m going to say what any “habit stacking” professional will say – stick with your routine!
Once you create your ideal schedule, stay consistent with it for at least 2 weeks. If after two weeks you find yourself hating it – pivot. Consistency is key though!
Elements of my early morning routine
For the rest of this post, I’m going to share more about the elements of my early morning routine. I hope that these provide you with some ideas to better craft your ideal schedule!
Have water first thing upon waking
Just like I learned with summer produce, my Registered Dietitian clients educated me on why you should have water first thing upon waking! Especially before coffee 🤗
Usually when I wake up, I immediately head into the kitchen to fill up my Simple Modern tumbler. I have the 40oz size and find it perfect for me! I normally fill this up 2-3 times during my day.
I try to aim for at least 8-10oz before I reach for my cup of coffee. If I workout that morning, I know I’ll definitely reach this goal but otherwise I have to pay more attention to it!
Quiet time with Jesus
It’s no secret around here – I’m a Christian (specifically Southern Baptist) and I do make my morning routine around my time with the Lord.
That said, the second thing I do is sit down with my Bible, devotional of choice and phone to begin reading and journaling.
For years now, I’ve journaled my devotionals because it’s the best way for me to learn and process the information I’m reading. I have a reel on our Chloe Creative account about this HERE.
Anyway – this part of my routine typically takes 30 minutes and follows:
- First 15 Devotional via app, journaling
- Bible plan of choice via Bible app, journaling (this usually rotates every 15-30 days depending on how long the plan is)
- Season of life focused book devotional (for example – I’m currently doing “Calm Your Anxious Mind”)
Exercise of some sort
I’m definitely the type of person that says “If I don’t exercise in the morning, I won’t at all”.
I know it’s an excuse, but I get very busy throughout my workdays and tend to push exercising out the window.
To avoid this, I include it in my morning routine which works great for me and sets up my day so nicely!
Right now, being 28 weeks pregnant, I’ve been using the Sculpt Society throughout my entire pregnancy. Prior to pregnancy, I was doing Peloton workouts or cycling classes 4-5 times a week! These workouts just haven’t felt great to me, so I switched it up!
This usually takes around 30-45 minutes of my routine.
Self care
For me, there are multiple ways I can practice self care. In my morning routine, this includes silence and reading a good book! Sometimes this is hard because I have two dogs in our house that love to bark at the TV or cause noise in the mornings – but hey, they are just preparing us for the newborn phase, right?!
Anyway, I typically do self care at the end of my morning routine. So, it’s last on the list!
If any of you are readers like I am, follow me on Goodreads! I’m currently reading a beach read by Kristin Harvey!
Love mornings with me!
I’m convinced that if you aren’t a morning person, you simply just haven’t found the right routine yet! In reality, most jobs start at 8 or 9AM – so, you have to be a morning person as an adult!
