As I officially enter my third trimester today, I find myself grabbing casual summer outfits that are comfortable, bump-friendly and most importantly, cooling. Living in North Carolina, we deal with very humid days so dresses have become my staple. In this post, I’ll cover three casual summer outfits that I’d highly recommend for newly pregnant mamas or late third trimester mamas.

This is my first pregnancy – so I’ve really gone throughout this process blindly. Luckily, I’ve had three older sisters who have been pregnant multiple times before me, but to experience this yourself is truly unique to you!
When chatting about expanding our family with my husband, it was of course on our minds what time of year I’d be at my “peak” AKA, third trimester. I really wanted to avoid the summer months as much as possible, but at some point, it’s inevitable. I am however really enjoying the summer desserts!
In this post, I’ll be chatting about a few outfits I’ve found myself purchasing and wearing non-stop. Jeans? Heck no. Pants? Pass. If you are in the same boat – you need these items now!
The Best Casual Summer Outfits Are…
With summer being upon us, finding something that’s casual, elevated and cooling is a must.
Especially if you are pregnant! I’ve found myself ordering a few things from my Nuuly rental, Amazon cart, Target and local stores to curate a wardrobe I feel comfortable with.
There are a couple of items I consistently reach for that fit all the above criteria:
- Dresses (yes, these can be casual!)
- Biker shorts & tees
- Onesies

Hear me out: if you aren’t partial to either of these items, neither was I prior to pregnancy. However, when you’re pregnant your body changes and with that comes lots of changes in preferences (like foods – I talk about that here). Let’s dive into each of these!
Summer Outfits #1: Dresses
Dresses have seriously been my number one go-to during pregnancy. Pre-pregnancy, I wasn’t that big of a dress girl! I find myself reaching for dresses the most because of how loose fitting they are around my bump. I have worn many form fitting options and have found these comfortable as well.
I love dresses as an casual summer outfits option because of their ability to dress up or down. Pair it with cute sneaks or a cardigan and you are golden!
We do also attend our local church every Sunday which is when these outfits really come in handy – my favorite one that I recently purchased was the Nap Dress from Hill House. It is a little pricy compared to other dress options on the market, but the design I selected was hand-drawn by an artist so it’s truly “one of a kind”!

One thing to note: I will literally wear the same shoes with most of my dresses 🤪 I purchased these platforms a while back when I could not find any shoe I liked that provided some height. These are literally what I grab everytime and I’d highly recommend!
Summer Outfits #2: Biker Shorts & Tees
I loooove high-waisted biker shorts. Even pre-pregnancy, pairing this with a cropped tee or a sports bra for an easy “athletic” look is perfect.
One of my very first maternity purchases were these biker shorts in a pack of two from Amazon. After reading the reviews, I was convinced this was what I needed to support my belly as it grows and boy were they right!
My only negative I have to say about them is how sweaty I get 😅 when I wear them. Granted, it is 100 degrees here in North Carolina, but I find myself pulling them down to let me belly breathe.
As I enter my third trimester, I’m considering buying more and sizing up. I have gained some weight mostly in my legs and these shorts in size small feel a tad tight.
I usually pair these shorts with just about any tee that’s in my closet – I tend to reach for this ribbed short sleeve from Lululemon or a large tee from my husband’s side of the closet 🤗 just depends on the day and if I want a more form-fitted look.
Casual Summer Outfits #3: Onesies
I saw a post the other day (not sure from who or I’d link it) that literally made me laugh out loud. It was a fellow woman who is also pregnant around the same time as I am and she said she loved the fact that it’s now accepted in society to wear ginormous baby onesies 😂
Man did I feel that one! But, she has a point.
A few years ago, I really can’t remember onesies even being a thing. I definitely think rompers made their rounds – but literal long sleeved / long pants that are connected to one another? Count me in!
Anyway, I actually purchased a few different “onesies” during pregnancy:
- Target maternity
- Old Navy athletic dress
And – I’ve had this one in my Amazon cart for months but have never bit the bullet.
My only downside with onesies is having to use the bathroom.. If you are a girl, you know. Getting undressed just to pee is such a hassle. So, I try to wear these sparingly or on days where I know I’m going to be at home for the day! This one from Target maternity has been my absolute favorite onesie to grab on days I want to dress up but still feel cozy!
