Planning content in advance is key to taking a successful time off during the holidays. Most of the time, the reason why we stop creating is due to time and resources. Instead of focusing on one social media platform, consider starting at your blog. In this post, we’re sharing how to plan content for social media starting with your online blog with the longest shelf life.

Why planning your content ahead of time is helpful
When deciding on how to plan content for social media ahead of the holidays, you’ll first need to determine where your efforts would be most helpful. For your business – is that your Instagram posts that can turn into blogposts, or your blog that can turn into social posts?
At Chloe Creative, our online blog is the central hub for content planning. Meaning, we always start our ideas there and build other content around it.
The reason we focus first on our blog is because your website has the longest shelf-life. You can count on blogposts performing for years down the road via an targeted SEO strategy. Whereas, Instagram posts or reels have a shelf life of a week at maximum.
Planning any type of content ahead of time is helpful regardless of where you start. More than half of the time, the reason we don’t push content out during busy seasons are because we simply don’t have the time to create. To solve this, plan many things ahead so you have a bank of ideas to choose from.
Transparently, that’s what this blogpost is! I am currently writing this blogpost as I await the arrival of our first child. I am planning all posts on our blog out to be released during the entire time of my maternity leave.
Why you should focus on blogging first
Above I mentioned that at our studio we like to focus on blogging first as the central hub of our content planning. I am a firm believer that the blog on your website should be where to place all of your efforts.
Take it from some of our clients – The Balanced Nutritionist, PCOS Nutritionist Alyssa or Bariatric Meal Prep. Each of these clients have great social media presence on their Instagram or TikTok accounts, but you’ll also note that they have consistent content going up on their blogs weekly.
One blogpost can continually bring traffic to your website for years ahead – see the attached screenshot below on one of our most popular pages to date.

Some of these pages in our top 10 ranking are actually blogposts that were written back in 2020-2021. That’s nearly 3-4 years ago!
It’s also helpful to note that we do have a very active Pinterest account which I highly recommend getting active on. Once you can gain traction with a consistent blogging schedule, you can then schedule out Pinterest Pins of that blogpost, reels or carousels and more!
How to plan content for social media: Tips for blogging
Now that you know our “secret sauce” for why blogging is so important for how to plan content for social media, let’s talk about how you can actually get to planning this content.
This will vary based on the type of person you are – say a Type A planner versus an individual who procrastinates – but we’ll tackle this from a perspective that you are ready to be that type A plan-ahead type of gal. Here’s the steps you’ll follow:
- Create a blog planner
- Determine your content days
- Build your content bank
Seems easy, right? Let’s dive into each of these points in depth below.
1. Create a blog planner
If you follow us on Instagram, you may have heard about our blog and content planner. We have a blog planner (for our blog) and a social content planner for our Instagram. Separately, we also have a Pinterest planner that our designers use to plan out Pinterest pins each week for each project and blogpost.
Circling back to the blog planner, we have everything internal to our studio housed in ClickUp. I can seriously write an entire series of blogs just on why ClickUp is so beneficial for us, but this blog planner is seriously one of my favorite things.
In our ClickUp blog planner, we essentially first crafted our different “categories” that we have on our online blog. For us, we have:
- Client Work (aka Portfolio)
- Promotion
- Step by Step Help
- Informative
- Personal Stories
Once we crafted these categories, we also crafted different “statuses” for each of these. Such as:
- Idea
- Outline
- First Draft
- Revisions
- For Approval
- Scheduled
- Complete
Having clearly-defined statuses keeps your blogpost area organized so that the team (and yourself) can take a quick glance at posts to see where they are in the content pipeline.
Lastly, we actually type out the blogposts within ClickUp Docs. We’ll cover more on this in the final step below, but this is so key to keeping everything organized for the team!
The biggest thing about a blog planner is being able to assign due dates for when the content should be finalized or written and when it should be published. We’d recommend crafting a field for both of these dates so that you can give yourself timelines to write content and then to publish.
2. Determine content days
After creating your blog planner in your platform of choice, you’ll then want to determine your content days. For me, blogging can be a very tedious and time-consuming task. Because of this, I know that I need a dedicated “admin day” where I can solely focus on the blogs at hand and only complete those.
For me, this looks like Monday mornings. Prior to leaving the work week on a Friday, I love to plan out my days ahead. Check out our BOD/EOD Planner Template for how we keep this organized!
On Friday evenings, I go into our blog planner and assign myself 2 blogposts for the following week to outline and schedule out for publishing. Because of my workflow, I know that I’ll sit down on Monday’s and at least get the content outlined and completed by Wednesday. Once the outline is complete, I can schedule for publishing according to when it needs to go out on the blog.
This is the same process that I follow for social media planning as well. I normally pick one day a week (normally Monday’s) to go into our social content calendar and film reels or craft carousels that I might need for the weeks ahead.
3. Build your content bank
The final step in how to plan content for social media is to actually build your content bank. Whether this is your blog planner or your social content calendar, anytime you have an idea, place it in the respective spot in your planner.
I always like to note here, that no idea is dumb! For me, I might have a random idea for a blog and place it into the blog planner. I usually will come back to that idea and tweak it to better fit the content our audience likes or to better fit our SEO strategies. Either way – getting those ideas down is key to growing your content bank!
After you gain traction on multiple content ideas, you can assign due dates and begin scheduling your ideas out for publishing. It’s easy to not get ahead of yourself here and want to publish everything right away. It’s better to tangibly get dates on a calendar so you can rest assured that the weeks ahead are covered!
How to plan content for social media: conclusion
Planning content ahead of time has always been immensely helpful for me, especially in high-stress seasons or in times when I want to be more present with family.
With the holiday season approaching, I am working hard to plan out content for the studio that is valuable and will serve our ideal clients. It’s also important to know that just because people won’t be as active on social media, doesn’t mean that your content won’t still be seen!
Again, this is why we like to focus on our online blog as the central hub to content planning. Your online blog has the longest shelf life next to Pinterest.
